"Vote No" โหวตโน by Faiyen

Note: This song, in the style of a call-and-response military cadence, urges Thais to VOTE NO in the upcoming referendum (August 7, 2016)  on the draft constitution because the whole process is illegitimate (it was written by a junta-appointed committee and anyone who criticizes it is arrested and threatened with 10 years in jail) and because proposed constitution is undemocratic with an appointed senate, a number seats reserved for the military, and the possibility of an unelected prime minister. More than two years ago (in May 2014) General Prayut Chan-ocha, overthrew the elected Thai government promising to "reform democracy." Instead he has created an Orwellian climate of fear. No one can organize in groups larger than 5 for purposes of political protest. Some were arrested for sitting in groups of more than 5 eating sandwiches. And he doesn't seem to have competency in subjects beyond how to stage a coup.

National Day song "June 24" (เพลงวันชาติ ๒๔ มิถุนายน)

Note: June 24 is Thailand's National Day, like American Independence Day, a few weeks later. On June 24, 1932, a group of military officers and civil servants, in a nearly bloodless transition, presented an ultimatum to the Thai King Prajadhipok, telling him that absolute monarchy was over but that he could stay as a constitutional monarch. At first the king accepted this, saying that he had been meaning to implement such a change himself, but then he abdicated 3 years later, left Thailand for Europe, and never returned. With the American and Thai National Days coming so close together, more than one of the American Thai activists has remarked on the fact that Thais longer celebrate their own National Day, and may not remember the National Day song translated for you below. June 24 was once a day celebrated as the first step towards democracy in Thailand, but this piece of history no longer fits with current propaganda about the essential role of the monarchy in Thailand. Note: This is one of several songs that are sung to demonstrate moral support and solidarity with political prisoners. Like "A New Sky,” also on the Faiyen’s new album, it is an uptempo version of a well-known ballad. Music of Thai Freedom posts this song in support of Rangsiman Rome, leader of the New Democracy Movement, and six other young activists, out of an original 13 arrested, who are still in jail (as of July 3, 2016) for distributing leaflets that recommended a “No” vote on the junta's Draft Constitution (a “crime” that carries a 10-year prison sentence).
