Note: Two years ago in Thailand, on May 22, 2014, General Prayut Chan-ocha overthrew the elected government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. At that time, I remember that this song from the musical Les Miserables was shared all over facebook. When I went to search for the song for this anniversary of the coup, I found many versions. This one was translated into Thai and sung by Aristo เดอะภารโรง and was arranged by Khun Tong Faiyen (ขุนทอง ไฟเย็น), of the band Faiyen ไฟเย็น.

Note: Infamous Article 122 of the Thai criminal code states "Whoever defames, insults or threatens the king, queen, heir-apparent, or regent shall be punished with imprisonment of three to fifteen years." The law has been condemned by the UN, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch as a violation of the right to free speech. The US Embassy continues to express it's disapproval. In recent years the definition of what constitutes an insult to royalty has broadened to ridiculous extremes, for instance, someone was charged with lese majesty for liking a joke on Facebook about the king's dog. People are going to jail at the rate of about a hundred people a year because anyone can accuse anyone of anything, and every accusation must be thoroughly investigated and vigorously pursued, lest the police be accused of lese majesty. Beyond the ruined lives for individual victims of this law, is the tragedy that Thais cannot openly discuss politics and their political future, as so many monarchy-related topics are now off limits. Note: In Thailand, many people worship King Bhumipol almost as a God and will say they love him as their พ่อ Paw (Father). The official story of King Bhumipol is very similar to that of Jesus: From the propaganda, you will learn that despite his billions of dollars, Bhumipol has selflessly and tirelessly devoted himself to serving the people. And that he is apolitical. The real story can only be read in banned books or gathered through gossip. Similar to the story of Jesus in majority Christian America, there is social pressure not to burst everyone's happy bubble with questions or inconvenient facts. But in Thailand, the situation is much more dangerous for freethinkers because a draconian lese majesty law (against insulting the royalty) means those who doubt the happy story of god-like King Bhumipol can go to jail for 3 to 15 years. Note: When General Prayut Chan-ocha overthrew Thailand’s elected government in May 2014 promising to “reform democracy,” many were actually expecting a quick return to democracy. However it’s now almost two years later, the junta is firmly entrenched, and there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. A new draft constitution for the Thai government has been written by a junta-appointed committee, and in August that draft will be voted on in a public referendum. The new draft constitution is much less democratic than previous constitutions, featuring an all-appointed Senate with 6 seats reserved for the military. Strangely, Prayut wants no public debate on the draft constitution. According to a confusingly worded “Referendum Act” anyone criticizing the draft constitution or recommending to others how to vote on it will go to jail for 10 years. [UPDATE: Because of national and international protests, now six 30-minute televised debates on the draft constitution will be held, but debaters "will not be allowed to . . . incite the viewers to vote one way or the other." ??? !!!! ] In this song, which spoofs an existing song by the same title, the group Resistant Citizen gleefully defies the gag order. This music video is the celebrity version and includes clips of famous dissidents who had to flee Thailand after the coup. Enjoy!
